About us

History

Shinbukan Kendo was established in April 2004, originally an extension of the Sydney Kendo Club for its members who lived in Sydney's north-west. Our numbers grew as we attracted new members from the surrounding area as well as members from affiliated clubs living in the area.
Senseis Danny Strenger Steven Lawley were our early teachers, but through health and work concerns no longer train. Masaru Onadera sensei, a visitor from Japan, trained with us for a year before returning home. Dale Gould sensei joined us at the beginning of 2010 and Toshio Nishimoto from the Sydney Kendo Club has been a regular visitor and instructor.
We initiated an Iaido class at the beginning of 2010. David Dinglestadt has been instructing the class as well as visits from Dean and Melissa Hawthorn. Dean has stood aside and Doug and Chris Trevillion now run the Sydney Iaido Club, Blue Leaf Dojo and Shinbukan Iaido Club.
